Original 1951 Notebooks - Pocket Size

  • $10.95

Will be in stock after

This is the pocket-size version of the Original 1951, a reissue of the original notebook made in that year by its renowned French manufacturer, Clairefontaine.  This mini-“model” is so useful and economical that we are offering them in sets of four.

The 3.5" x 5.5" pages are smooth white French-milled 90g paper, ruled, fountain pen- and marker-friendly, acid-free and pH neutral. The cover has a blank subject window.

Legend has it that the same notebook, in a larger size, was the one used by Julia Child to record her recipes when she was at the Cordon Bleu. (The notebook made a cameo appearance in Nora Ephron’s 2009 movie, “Julie & Julia.”)

Walk into any stationery shop in France and you’ll see an extensive array of this company’s beloved notebooks.  Clairefontaine manufactures the classic composition book introduced to French schoolchildren in primary school; the notebooks, in various bindings and sizes, then become seemingly indispensable for decades to come.

The company was founded in 1858 in the town of Etival Clairefontaine, 90 km from Strasbourg, in the valley of the Meurthe river. There, the production of paper was to become an important business because of the availability of rags supplied by the local textile industry.  In 1880 the company’s paper mill began manufacturing envelopes, soon to be followed by the iconic notebooks.

Sold in sets of 4 (one each red, blue, green, turquoise.) Softbound; 48 sheets (96 pages); 3-1/2” x 5-1/2”
