First introduced in the 1940s, the Uncle Wiggily Game is fun for both children who can read and those just learning. Players draw cards and follow the simple rhymes to advance their game piece forward, hopping along with Uncle Wiggily Longears through the forest to Dr. Possum’s house. The cards also feature numbers and symbols so children who cannot yet read can also play. Adults will appreciate the vintage look of the illustrations; kids will simply be charmed by them.

We took Uncle Wiggily for a "test drive" with two children of one of our editors, ages 4 and 6. The 4-year-old is a pre-reader, the 6-year-old is a new reader; both loved playing the game. The younger child was able to practice numbers and counting, and the beginning reader was able to read the cards. Their review: "The game was fun, the rhymes were fun, and the pictures are funny because all the animals are wearing clothes."

A word of admiration and astonishment: the author of the Uncle Wiggily stories, Howard R. Garris, wrote an Uncle Wiggily story every day (except Sundays) for more than 52 years. He began writing the stories for the Newark News in 1910, inspired by a walk in the woods in New Jersey.

The set contains a game board, 4 Uncle Wiggily game pieces, and 48 cards. For ages 4 to 8.
