Jane Austen Playing Cards
This beautifully illustrated deck can be used the same way as traditional playing cards (it features standard suits, numbers, and court cards) …but if you’re game, the accompanying booklet provides rules and playing instructions for five Regency-era card games featured in Austen’s novels, along with references to the mentions.
Suits are themed on character traits: hearts are Heroines and Heroes (Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet are the King and Queen, of course); spades are Fools and Bores; diamonds are Friends and Relations; clubs are Rogues and Mischief-makers.
Whatever way you choose to use the deck, you’ll delight in the illustrations of Austen's most famous characters featured on the cards.
The author, Professor John Mullan, is Lord Northcliffe Chair of Modern English Literature and head of the English department at University College London.
