Gertrude Stein as a Child Holiday Cards
Like all of the wildly imaginative art of Edward Gorey, this drawing, entitled “Gertrude Stein as a child decorates a dog for Christmas,” seems more truthful than reality. Archival photographs of Gertrude Stein as a child of three—long curls, big hair bow, frilly pinafore, and earrings no less—seem to miss something elemental. Leave it to Edward Gorey to get it right. Not only Gertrude’s portrait, but her interest; long before she was decorating the walls at 27, rue de Fleurus, she was decorating her dog for the holidays.
The drawing was published in 1975 as a card in a limited edition edition of 400, to be used as a holiday greeting “for the artist and publisher", Albondocani Press. The cards were not offered for sale. Established in 1968, active into the mid-nineties, and revived in the early 2000s, Albondocani published postcards, novels, poetry books, and reprints of classics. Its publisher, George Bixby, was known for his devotion to writers, who included Stein, Marianne Moore, Saul Bellow, E. M. Forster, and others. Fortunately, this rare card has been brought back into print by the Edward Gorey Estate.
Set of 12. Cards measure 5" x 7", are blank on the inside and include envelopes.
