The writer was born in New Zealand and died in 1923 at the age of 34. She was widely recognized as one of the most innovative writers of modernist short stories. She was admired and respected by the avant-garde of the early twentieth century, including Virginia Woolf, although the two had an intense and difficult relationship. Upon Mansfield’s death, Woolf wrote in her diary: “I was jealous of her writing—the only writing I have ever been jealous of."
