Rummikub: Keepsake Edition

Rummikub: Keepsake Edition

  • $75.00

This classic tile game of creating runs and sets of numbers is a beloved family game for two to four players based on rummy and mahjong. The new edition features a wooden storage box containing a complete set of 106 Rummikub game tiles. The box’s clever slide-off lids double as wood tile racks. This classic edition is the perfect keepsake for fans of the game, those who love gathering together for games, and all who appreciate the simple charms of things well-made.

Players are given fourteen or sixteen tiles initially and take turns putting down tiles from their racks into sets (groups or runs) of at least three, drawing a tile if they cannot play.

Note: The manufacturer suggests this game is for ages eight and up, but in our experience, six-year-olds who know their numbers play and enjoy Rummikub.

The game has a fascinating back story. According to Wikipedia:

Rummikub was invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian-born Jew, who emigrated to Israel after World War II. He hand-made the first sets with his family in the backyard of his home. Hertzano sold these sets door-to-door on a consignment basis at small shops. Over the years, the family licensed it to other countries and it became Israel's best-selling export game. In the 1970s it was brought to the United States by Irv and Arline Kossoff to sell in their New York’s Gift, Games, and Luggage store. Arline translated the rules from Hebrew to English, and by 1977, it became a bestselling game in the United States.
