These charming illustrations of cherries were discovered in a French book about fruits and flowers first published in the 1830s. Cherries hold a vivid place in the collective French imagination. This illustration calls to mind the song, “Le Temps des Cerises” (“The Time of Cherries”), written in 1866 and still beloved throughout French-speaking countries. Strongly associated with the Paris Commune, it is considered an anthem predicting an idyllic life in post-Revolutionary France.
