With roiling seas, snapping sails, and cannons at the ready, this nautical scene will draw you back in time 500 years to coastal England. Henry VIII leads this fleet of ships from Dover’s port from aboard the Henry Grace à Dieu, the world’s largest warship at the time, which instead departs for a peace summit with Francis I of France. The two men hoped to be remembered as true Renaissance kings, strong enough to rule through diplomacy. Though the meeting—later known as the Field of the Cloth of Gold—had little long-term success, its lavish displays were immortalized in a pair of paintings for Whitehall Palace and re-created by many artists throughout the centuries.
